Our effect on Haiti

An editorial in the New York Times (registration required) sums it up:
Haiti was a deeply troubled democracy when the Bush administration took office. Now it is an even more deeply troubled nondemocracy. ...
It seems we either try to force democracy on countries from the top down, or to destabilize democratically elected governments we don't approve of.

The derailing of democracy in Haiti should have been a lesson about the difficulty in exporting democracy to countries without a democractic tradition. Our Founding Fathers understood the risks of handing the reigns to an electorate that had little experience in democracy. We invested too little in the Haitian people and too much in political parties. See my commentary:

Intervention, quick elections and an exit haven't worked in the past and recent elections in the middle east would indicate that it is not likely to be effective in the future.
