Who do we vigil for?

Sojourners is planning a series of vigils around the country during the weekend of the second anniversary of the Iraq war. My first reaction was positive.

But then I started thinking ... thousands have died in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands died during the tsunami. And over a million have died died in Africa from war and diseases.

Who do we vigil for?

Well, 1480 Americans have died from he war in Iraq. But according to The Lancet, 100,000 Iraqis have died from the current war. Also, something in the range of 500,000 Iraqis died as a result of sanctions. And the American secretary of state declared that this cost was worth it.

So an explicit policy that causes death may cause different ethical obligations than a lack of charity or policy to alleviate suffering.
