Destroy the Environment To Hasten the Second Coming of Christ
I thank Social Gospel Today for pointing out a speech by Bill Moyers, accepting Harvard Medical School's annual Global Environment Citizen Award."The speech discusses Moyers' fear that those who believe in the infallibility of the bible are more than willing - if not actively trying - to exploit and destroy the environment in order to hasten the second coming of Christ. It is a chilling thought."

Paul - I am seriously amazed the West has survived as long as it has beneath the cloud of fundamentalist religious fatalism. This is an astonishing miracle. The fatalism of most apocalyptic espousers is on an upswing thanks largely to the hit book series "Left Behind." If this world is a mere "boot camp" for the after-life, and God is going to avenge all the "good-folks" by destroying the world and all of its evil inhabitants (nature has been by the way, and according to orthodoxy, corrupted by the "fall")then why stretch ourselves to protect or even sustain it?
This is very detrimental and sad...I am, again, amazed the West has endured this long under such a fatalistic attitude.
