Cary Tennis: "Our New Friend is a Racist"
I'm a big fan of a giver-of-advance on Salon.com named Cary Tennis. A recent column is entitled Our new friend is a racist -- should we dump him?.If your gut reaction to that question is anywhere close to "of course!", you might want to read the column.

I like Cary Tennis's column (when I read it), and haven't read that one yet, but actually having several "racist" friends, I would say ... the decision to dump them really depends on you.
I don't think you "should" be friends with anyone who makes you feel like crap all the time, or diminishes your personal light, so to speak. But some friends teach you things, give you opportunities for growth, etc.
The tough part is that sometimes you don't want to condone the racist beliefs of someone by being friends with them. For example, I cringe to think that several of my friends could very well pull out the "Some of my best friends are black/latina/people of color" if engaged with a racial discussion with someone else. And it would be true! That doesn't make what they say any less racist, though.
