The relativists among us would feel ashamed and outraged for this disrespectful mockery of a belief dearly held by our Fundamentalist neighbors, i.e. that God is always ultimately in control.

Our relativists would say that this is their meaningful narrative, which represents what is of ultimate meaning and importance for those people. We rational, cold-corpse, science-obsessed liberals shouldn't dare to challenge this or any other interpretation of natural phenomena, because this belong to the realm of higher spiritual realization. Who are we to judge on the opinions of others, anyway?

Of course, I am not a relativist (at least, not to this degree).

But there are others who really think this, or sth similar along these lines. It is the best self-defeating argument that any progressive can think of to hamper any effort to implement our values in the wider society.
