Folly Beach, SC

This past Saturday, we returned from a vacation at Folly Beach, SC - right outside of Charleston.

Charleston's a terrific and charming small city - well worth a visit. It was our 4th trip to the area in 2 years - we do seem to be drawn there. What's fascinating is the number of northerners who have moved to the area. We keep running into people from the Boston metro area every time we visit. When we were leaving, for example, and returning our car, the man who processed the paperwork told us he had been a banker in the Boston area and had lived In Hingham, MA, less than 1/2 hour from where we live. He retired to a climate where, in his words, he could wear shorts in February. Gotta like it.

The Unitarian Church in Charleston is, according to them, the largest UU charge in the South.

We rented an intimate place in Folly Beach called Pelican Alley. (All of the rental places have names.) Just 50 feet or so from the ocean. The owners of the property live upstairs, and very graciously provided us with a bottle of wine. They're coming up to Maine for their vacation!

Hi Paul,

Sorry we didn't get a chance to get together while you were in the CHS area. Maybe next time!

I didn't quite understand the "largest UU charge in the South" part, but maybe you meant oldest? There are many larger UU congregations in the South. (In regard to oldest, it's a close call between New Orleans and Charleston, and, as usual, depends largely upon criteria. The folks in Charleston seem to have a pretty solid case, though.

The new Summerville group is still struggling to find its legs, but we're still at it.

Stay warm up there, Paul! (I MAY use my fireplace once or twice this winter ;-)

I expect you're right about the Unitarian Church of Charleston being the oldest in the South rather than the biggest. I'll have to check what their sign says.

Yes, the next time my wife and I are down, we'll definitely have to get together. We're big fans of Summerville - we went on our regular tour of Legend Oaks to see which houses we like :)
